Community Service Events During my Dietetic Internship
Senior Center Cooking Demonstration: New Year's Resolution Theme
Along with two other interns, I planned and presented a cooking demonstration at the Charlottesville Senior Center about incorporating more fruits and vegetables into the diet for a New Year's Resolution. We wanted to show the seniors how versatile fruits and vegetables are and provide them with creative ways to use them. We demonstrated how to make a green smoothie, spaghetti squash primavera, and zucchini brownies. After cooking for the seniors, we provided them with samples, answered questions, and gave out an educational handout that included the recipes of everything we made.

Food Groups Lesson: Crozet Elementary
Two other interns and I developed a lesson and activity to teach the food groups to the Kindergarten classes at Crozet Elementary. We created a large poster of MyPlate and printed examples of different foods for the students to place on the correct section of MyPlate. This lesson not only exposed the children to the different food groups and gave them examples of foods that belong in each group, but it also demonstrated that a healthy diet involves eating foods from all of the food groups. The presentation was a great success and the students were very involved throughout the half-hour. We donated our presentation materials to the Kindergarten teachers for use in the future.

"Eating the Rainbow" Presentation: Head Start
Head Start is a childhood development program for three-and-four year old children who come from families in need. The program provides educational activities to the children to enhance school readiness. Two other interns and I developed a lesson plan, activity, and snack to teach the children about healthful eating. To encourage the children to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, we made a poster with a large rainbow on it and printed examples of different colorful fruits and vegetables. We had the children come up one at a time, say the name of the food, and place it on the correct part of the rainbow. At the end of the activity, we passed around grapes and carrots to let the kids try a few of the colors of the rainbow.

Table Displays and Question/Answer Session: Portico Church Young Lives Group
Young Lives is a support group for teenage mothers sponsored by Portico Church. The goal of this presentation was to talk to the mothers and mentors about general healthful eating. Along with two other interns, we gathered nutrition education materials and created two display tables that talked about proper portion sizes, the Plate Method, and sugar content in sugar-sweetened beverages. After the participants viewed our tables, we answered their questions about healthy eating habits.
